Thy Art Is Murder é uma banda de deathcore da Austrália, criada em 2006, e que está começando a conquistar fãs mundo a fora. Mesmo novo, o grupo já teve diversas formações e hoje conta com Sean Delander (baixo e guitarra), Lee Stanton (bateria), Andy Marsh (guitarra) e Chris “CJ” McMahon (vocais). Durante a última passagem do grupo pelo Reino Unido, em julho, a jornalista italiana – radicada em Londres – Fabiola Santini conversou com o vocalista CJ McMahon sobre todos os aspectos da turnê europeia, a expectativa de tocar nos Estados Unidos e as impressões sobre o mais recente álbum da banda, Hate, lançado em 2013 pela Nuclear Blast.

Portal do Inferno: Legal ter o Thy Art Is Murder de volta ao Reino Unido! Na última vez que os vi, no The Barfly, em Londres, vocês fizeram um grande show. Hate, seu segundo álbum é um dos meus lançamentos preferidos de 2013. Quais fatores você acha que transformaram o Thy Art Is Murder no que é hoje?
Chris “CJ” McMahon: Os caras começaram a banda em 2006, eu entrei no começo de 2008 e tudo o que fizemos foi ensaiar e ensaiar e compor. Sacrificamos nossos trabalhos e o tempo que tínhamos para aqueles que amamos, literalmente demos tudo para a banda, guardamos cada dólar que ganhávamos para poder sair mais em turnê e gravar álbuns melhores. Trabalhamos duro, escrevemos as músicas que queríamos escrever e os fãs gostaram. Hate teve uma ótima repercussão e aqui estamos agora!
P.I.: Quais são suas maiores influências como vocalista e que ajudaram a definir o seu estilo?
CJ: Minhas influências são bem diferentes da forma que eu canto. Eu cresci ouvindo grunge, Nirvana era tudo para mim, então conheci bandas como Limp Bizkit, Deftones e coisas mais pesadas como Meshuggah e Behemoth. Quando entrei para o Thy Art Is Murder, os caras me disseram como os vocais deveriam ser e trabalhamos nisso. Eu posso mudar meus vocais dependendo de como deve soar e trabalhei muito para alcançar o tom da banda. Após cinco anos no grupo, acho que adaptei a minha voz para o som do Thy Art Is Murder. Sem dúvida, tenho influências de outros vocalistas, mas gosto de manter meus vocais originais mais do que tudo.
P.I.: Como você conheceu os outros integrantes da banda?
CJ: Vivemos na mesma região e somos amigos há muitos anos. Substituí o vocalista original em alguns shows e, depois de um tempo, eles me perguntaram se eu queria ficar na banda de vez. Naquela época, eu estava em outra banda onde as coisas não estavam muito boas, eu tinha que fazer tudo e, sabe, decidi ir para o Thy Art Is Murder e tem sido um ótimo relacionamento desde então.
P.I.: A banda está em turnê há muito tempo. Como vocês são da Austrália, ir para a Europa deve ser bem complicado. Toda essa coisa de turnê põe uma pressão em suas vidas pessoais, ou vocês se sentem dispostos já que essa é a hora certa de fazer isso com a banda?
CJ: É como dizem: faça enquanto você tem uma boa oportunidade, e é o que temos que fazer. Nenhum de nós está ficando mais jovem, então, temos que estar em turnê enquanto podemos. Não me afeta pessoalmente, já que tenho uma parceira compreensiva. Minha namorada realmente apoia o que eu faço. Quando estou viajando com a banda, sinto tanto a falta dela que tudo o que eu queria é estar em casa com ela, sabe? E ela sempre me diz que eu devo seguir em frente, fazer isso pela minha carreira e, assim, poderemos ter uma vida melhor. Eu devo todo esse apoio a minha namorada.
P.I.: O apoio das pessoas queridas é a base para o sucesso. Então, enquanto gravavam o Hate, vocês tinham ideia de que teria o sucesso que teve?
CJ: A gente meio que sabia, sim! Estávamos gravando em Nova York e, quando o Hate foi finalizado, sabíamos que o álbum seria grande, mas não imaginávamos que seria tanto, como é agora.
P.I.: Fiquei bastante desapontada com o review negativo da Decibel Magazine, você acha que foi apenas uma questão de tentar ser legal e diferente?
CJ: Eu nem sabia sobre esse review negativo até agora. Tenho ouvido outras pessoas falando muitas coisas sobre nós, mas não nos incomoda. Nosso público é muito pequeno, mas está crescendo com muita rapidez, é bizarro! Se as pessoas dizem coisas boas, é legal, mas se dizem coisas ruins, não significa nada para nós. Sempre existirão pessoas que nos odeiam e que não gostam do que fazemos. É assim com todo mundo, até com uma pessoa com um trabalho normal, que é legal e amigável com todos e terá sempre duas ou três pessoas que, por alguma razão idiota, não gostará dele ou dela. Você nunca vai encontrar uma pessoa nesse planeta que todos gostam. Estamos num lugar privilegiado, porque a cada uma ou duas coisas ruins que dizem, temos outras centenas de pessoas que lutariam por nós. Não posso deixar esses comentários pequenos nos afetarem.
P.I.: Concordo, e falando sobre positividade, como foi tocar no The Big Day Out neste ano? É um daqueles festivais que os europeus sonham em ir algum dia e deve ter sido bem especial para vocês.
CJ: Quando tocamos, foi o dia mais quente na Austrália, o dia mais quente da história de Sydney, fez 47 ºC! Tudo estava ardendo, com ventos quentes, foi muito quente, mas maravilhoso! Milhares de pessoas apareceram e se divertiram conosco e fomos a banda mais pesada que tocou no The Big Day Out nos últimos 15 anos…
P.I.: E vocês são australianos…
CJ: Foi ótimo! Nós amamos, não dá para comparar com nenhum festival europeu.
P.I.: Quais são seus festivais europeus preferidos?
CJ: Fico dividido entre o Ghostfest, no Reino Unido, With Full Force, na Alemanha, e Graspop, na Bélgica. Tocamos nesses três festivais e foi simplesmente maravilhoso. A forma como eles cuidam de nós, o serviço de alimentação, os quartos, tocamos diante de cinco, dez mil pessoas… incrível, surreal, fora de controle!
P.I.: Vamos falar sobre os Estados Unidos, sua base de fãs também está crescendo lá e vocês farão uma turnê como parte do Summer Slaughter (N.E.: os shows da Summer Slaughter tour aconteceram entre os dias 19 de julho e 20 de agosto).
CJ: Sim! Acabamos de fazer uma turnê com o Cattle Decapitation na Austrália. Vamos passar duas semanas na Europa e vamos nos juntar a eles no Summer Slaughter. Essa é a primeira vez que vamos tocar pelos Estados Unidos em um dos maiores festivais de metal, estamos ansiosos e esperamos que nosso nome e nossa música possam crescer lá.
P.I.: Sem dúvidas quanto a isso. E vocês tocaram no Garage sem grade entre a banda e o público…
CJ: Eu amo isso.
P.I.: Eu ia perguntar se você ficava apreensivo, pois me lembro que no The Barfly tinham muitas pessoas que subiram no palco com você.
CJ: Não! Eu estava bem doente no show no The Barfly, inclusive. Se você achou que cantei bem naquele show, precisa ver agora.
P.I.: Eu não reparei nisso, nem os fãs que conversei depois do show. Você espera que a plateia esteja fora do controle de novo?
CJ: Sim, isso é Londres! Toda a passagem pela Europa tem sido insana. Este show teve todos os ingressos vendidos há uma semana, e tem muita expectativa: agora nós realmente temos que subir no palco e tocar da melhor forma possível. Haverá muita gente na casa, fãs, gravadora, representantes, agentes, jornalistas, fotógrafos, todas essas pessoas esperam muito de nós, sentimos a pressão. Não podemos estragar tudo, temos que destruir o lugar, nós precisamos fazer isso. Nós somos os azarões, mas tenho toda a confiança do mundo, em mim e nos garotos, de que vamos destruir tudo.
Portal do Inferno: Nice to have Thy Art Is Murder back to the UK! Last time I saw you live at The Barfly here in London, you delivered a great show. Hate, your second full length is one of my favourite releases of 2013. What do you think are the factors that made Thy Art Is Murder the band that has become?
Chris “CJ” McMahon: The boys started the band in 2006, I joined them at the beginning of 2008 and all we did was practice and practice and kept writing. We sacrificed our day jobs and time with our loved ones, we literally gave the band everything, we saved every dollar that we have ever earned so we could tour more and we could record better albums. We worked really hard, we wrote the music that we wanted to write and the fans liked it. Hate just exploded and here we are now!
P.I.: What were the major influences for you as a vocalist, that helped you to define your style?
CJ: My vocal influences are very different from the way I sound. I grew up listening to grunge, Nirvana was a big thing for me, then I came through bands like Limp Bizkit, Deftones and I got into the heavier stuff like Meshuggah and Behemoth. When I joined Thy Art Is Murder, the boys pitched me what the vocals should sound like and we worked around that. I can change my vocals depending on what they have to suit, I have worked really very hard to capture this vocal tone. After being with the band for five years, I think that I have been adapting my voice to have that Thy Art Is Murder sound. I definitely take influences from other vocalist but I like to keep my vocals original more than anything.
P.I.: How did you meet the other band members?
CJ: We all lived in the same area, we have been friends for many years. I filled in for their original vocalist for few shows and after a while, I was asked to join the band permanently. At that time, I was in another band where things were not working out that well, as I was left to do everything and you know what? I just decided to go to Thy Art Is Murder and it has been a beautiful relationship ever since.
P.I.: Thy Art Is Murder has been touring extensively. Since you are based in Australia, coming all the way to Europe must be quite difficult. Is all this touring putting a strain on your personal lives or do you feel all charged up as this is the right time for you to do so as a band?
CJ: You know what they say, strike while the iron is hot, that’s what we have to do. None of us is getting any younger, so we need to tour all the time. It doesn’t really affect me personally as I have a very understanding partner, my girlfriend is really supportive of what I do. When I go on tour I miss her so much that I just want to be at home with her you know? And she always says that I should keep it going, to make all this becoming my career so that both of us could have a better life. I owe it all to the support of my girlfriend.
P.I.: The support of loved ones is the foundation for true success. So during the making of Hate, were you actually aware that it was going to explode like that?
CJ: We did kind of know yeah! We were recording in New York, when Hate was all finished we knew this was going to be big but we did not think it was going to be as big as it is now.
P.I.: I was very disappointed by the negative review from Decibel Magazine, do you think it was just a question of pretending to be cool and different?
CJ: I did not even know about that negative review until now. I have heard other people saying many things about us but it doesn’t bother us, we don’t care. Our market is very small but it’s growing so quickly, it’s bizarre! If people say good things it’s cool, and if they say bad things it doesn’t mean anything to us. There are always going to be people that hate us and don’t like what we are doing. It’s like that for everybody, even for a normal person at work that is nice and friendly to everybody, there will be at least two or three people that for some stupid reasons are not going to like him or her. You will not find a person on the planet that everybody likes. We are in a lucky position because for any one or two bad things that people say about us, we’ve got thousands of people that would fight for us, positive fans. I cannot let this small, every now and then negative comment affect us.
P.I.: I agree and talking about positivity around you, what was it like to play at The Big Day Out this year? It’s one of those festivals that we Europeans dream of attending one day and for you it must have been pretty special.
CJ: When we played it was the hottest day in Australia, the hottest day on record in Sidney, 47 degrees! It was like burning, with hot winds, it was bloody hot but it was awesome! We had a couple of thousand people showing up and having fun with us and we were the heaviest band that has ever played at The Big Day Out in the last fifteen years….
P.I.: And you are Australian…
CJ: It was great! We loved it, it doesn’t compare though to any of the Europeans festivals.
P.I.: What are your favourite European festivals?
CJ: It’s an equal tie between Ghostfest here in the UK, With Full Force in Germany and Graspop in Belgium. All these three festivals where we just played in are simply amazing. The way they look after you, the catering, the rooms, you play in front of five thousand, ten thousand people…. amazing, surreal, out of control!
P.I.: Let’s talk about the US, your fan base is also growing over there where you will be touring as part of the Summer Slaughter.
CJ: Yeah! We have just toured with Cattle Decapitation in Australia. We are going to spend two weeks here in Europe and we will then join them for the Summer Slaughter. This is the first time we are touring the US with one of the biggest metal fest, we cannot wait and hope we can still grow the name and the music there.
P.I.: No doubt about this. Tonight you will be playing at the Garage, with no barrier between the band and the crowd.
CJ: I love that.
P.I.: I was going to ask you if you were afraid as I remembered at The Barfly there were lot of people who jumped on stage with you.
CJ: Nah! I was very sick at The Barfly by the way, if you think that I sang good then, wait until tonight.
P.I.: Well I did not noticed it all and neither did the fans I spoke to after the show. Are you expecting the crowd to be out of control again tonight?
CJ: Yeah, this is London. All through Europe has been mind-blowing. This show sold out a week ago, there is so much hype: now we really have to step up and play as good as possible. There are going to be so many people in the venue, fans, label reps, agents, journalists, photographers, all these people will have such a high expectation, the pressure is on us. We cannot fuck this up, we have to destroy this venue, we HAVE to. We are the underdogs, but I have all the confidence in the world in myself and my boys that we are going to destroy this venue.
